Using Garden Fabric on Squashes, Melons, and Pumpkins
For cucurbits (squashes and melons):
- First plant the seeds.
- Secure garden fabric over seeds and seedlings. You can often just thread sticks through the fabric to attach it to the ground.
- Be sure to allot enough extra fabric so the plants have room to grow.
- Leave fabric in place until they have flowered, then remove.
- This will inhibit cucumber beetles long enough so that even if they infect the plant with wilt, the plant won't die until after it's had a nice, long, productive season.
- This must be removed in order to allow for pollination!
Garden Fabric Details:
- One location that has sold it in the past is Johannsen's.
- It is a thin white fabric that is slightly porous and shear, allowing in water and light.
- It is sometimes called row cover.
