When can I buy floating row cover at the garden? I would like to plant the coles I started indoors ASAP but I had such a problem with flea beetles last year that I am afraid to plant them without some sort of protection. _________________ Liz Falendysz |

Dear Gardener,
We sold out of floating row cover at the Seed Fair this year. We still have a little plastic mulch left and will sell pieces at the workdays.
Floating row cover is a good protector from flea beetles. You can purchase small pieces at most of the larger garden stores. Unfortunately, this will be more expensive than the bulk purchase we did.
We will purchase more row cover for next year.

Dear Gardeners,
In the fall, I rarely have problems with flea beetles. I've taken to growing the arugula, bok choi and Napa cabbage in the fall and don't seem to need the row cover. You might try that at this point,

| There is a handout under the "tips" section of the website on row cover use in general. You can use if all year long on some crops, but not those that need insect fertilzation. Most people use it at critical times when the flea beetles or potato beetles are bad, and then take it off. Most row cover is lightweight and not very sturdy, but you can buy heavier stuff. Won't work for squash or cucumbers once the flowering starts because the bees and other pollinators need to get to the flowers, but I use it on young plants if they are getting eaten by insects. |
